課程概述

This course will introduce students to Latin, the language of the ancient Romans and the first to use the Latin alphabet now used, in modified form, for languages as diverse as English, Spanish, and Vietnamese. I aim to introduce students not only to Latin itself but also to the rich world of Roman literature, culture, and history, which students will be able to explore in greater depth during Latin II. Latin was spoken throughout much of the ancient Mediterranean and Western Europe. It then became one of the most important languages of medieval Europe, being used extensively in education and administration until the early modern period. Today, Latin has birthed the many Romance languages (such as French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese), given English a large portion of its vocabulary, and even continues to be used within the Catholic church

In this course, the first part of Latin I, you will begin learning the Latin language and cover most of the first half of the Introduction to Latin text. This course focuses on learning to read Latin, primarily via translation into English. Despite the sometimes-difficult subject material, I aim to keep the class fun and infuse it with the same love of Latin that inspired me to study the language in the first place!

By the end of the semester, students should understand the structure of basic Latin sentences and be able to translate them. They should also develop some command of core Latin vocabulary and be able to read simple Latin stories. They will understand core concepts such as noun-adjective and subject-verb agreement, tense, aspect and mood, and the basic uses of each case (that is to say, how the verb and noun-endings work in Latin and why they are important). Students will also be able read Latin aloud with confidence and accuracy.

課程目標
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Understand simple Latin sentences and adapted stories.
2. Read Latin aloud with reasonable accuracy.
3. Compose accurate English translations of simple Latin sentences and adapted stories.
4. Recognize core Latin vocabulary in context.
5. Apply elementary Latin grammatical concepts, such as noun-adjective and subject-verb agreement, cases and their basic uses, and verbal tense.
6. Discuss some aspects of Roman literature, culture, and history.
課程要求
Students are required to attend class twice weekly. Students should come to class having prepared all assigned homework and readings, and actively participate in class and small-group activities. Students will complete weekly low-stakes quizzes, two tests, and a final exam.

Attendance and Participation (20% of Grade)

This category includes attending class, your preparation for work to be reviewed or discussed in class, your participation in class discussion, and your performance on exercises and drills done in class.

Daily attendance is extremely important for your success in this course. If you need to miss a class, please contact me as soon as possible and come to the next possible student hours (see above) to discuss missed work. There is one point for attendance and one for participation each class day. If you are absent with no advance warning, you lose both points; if you attend class but are unprepared or unengaged in class, you lose the participation point.

Homework (20% of Grade)

Homework will reflect the needs and pace of the class and will be posted weekly to NTU COOL and announced in class. The reason I am unable to provide more advanced notice of homework assignments is because I like to preserve the flexibility to choose the assignments best targeted to the specific needs of the class. Some homework weekly will be graded for correctness, the rest will be graded for completion.

Weekly Quizzes (15% of Grade)

I will give twelve short (10-20 minute) quizzes over the course of the semester. These quizzes are meant to motivate you to keep up with the material as we go along. Because each new chapter builds on the previous one, it is important that you spread out your studying time over the course of the semester so that you retain the material. I will give you an example before each quiz so you will know what to expect.

These quizzes will focus on vocabulary and verb and noun endings (verbal and nominal morphology), though some will also feature short translation or other material. Vocabulary will be taken from the list of core vocabulary made available on NTU COOL, and I also hope to make vocabulary cards available to you via Quizlet as an additional study aid.

These quizzes are not intended to be a major source of stress, and as such I will automatically drop your two lowest quizzes from your grade.

Tests (25%) and Final Exam (20%)

There will be two tests as well as a final exam. Each test will focus on the material presented since the last test but will also include some review from previous exams. What to study for each test and the final, as well as their format, will be made clear in class and from a pretest that will be provided before each test or exam.
